Outgoing prime minister Shinzo Abe has no intention of dictating the process to select his replacement and new leader of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP). 62-year-old Shigeru Ishiba has been Mr Abe’s arch-rival within the party for over a decade. He ran in the LDP presidential race twice before and lost to Mr Abe due to a lack of support from party lawmakers. Meanwhile, chief cabinet secretary Yoshihide Suga, who has been Mr Abe’s loyal right-hand man, is emerging as a lead candidate to replace his boss.
