Japan’s leadership race heats up


Who will be Japan’s next prime minister? Outgoing prime minister Shinzo Abe has no intention of dictating the process to select his replacement and new leader of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP). 62-year-old Shigeru Ishiba has been Mr Abe’s arch-rival within the party for over a decade. He ran in the LDP presidential race twice before and lost to Mr Abe due to a lack of support from party lawmakers. Meanwhile, chief cabinet secretary Yoshihide Suga, who has been Mr Abe’s loyal right-hand man, is emerging as a lead candidate to replace his boss.
